September Trees is Alec Van's first ever original composition. The piece draws inspiration from the contrapuntal character, ornamentation and formal sensibilities of the Baroque-era while blending and incorporating Alec's own contemporary harmonic and melodic ideas. The piece visualizes the changes in September as the seasons transition: the shifting of colors of the trees and the movement of their leaves are reflected metaphorically in the evolving melody. This transformation mirrors Alec's own development and maturation from young pianist interpreting works of established composers to an emerging composer discovering and expressing his own musical voice.
